In this article, I’ll show you how to download and install Inkscape, the free scalable vector graphics editor, on your Mac computer. Plus, I show you how to update to the latest version of Inkscape.

Let’s get into it!

Table of Contents

1. Visit the Inkscape Website

For starters, go to the Inkscape main website at Inkscape is always available for FREE from this website (so never pay for Inkscape elsewhere!).

Once on the main website, click the “Download Now!” button (green arrow in the above image) or go to Download>Current Stable Version in the main menu (red arrow).

If the Inkscape website doesn’t automatically recognize your operating system, click on the “macOS” option on the next screen (green arrow in the above image).

2. Choose Your Chip Architecture

Next, Inkscape will ask if you’re using an “Intel” chip or an “Apple M1” chip (outlined in green in the above image).

If you’re not sure what chip your computer uses, click the apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen and select “About This Mac” (red arrow).

Under the “Overview” tab, you’ll see a line labeled “Processor” (outlined in red). If you see the word “Intel” anywhere on this line (green arrow), your computer uses an Intel chip. If you see “M1” or “Apple M1,” your computer uses an Apple M1 chip.

Return to the Inkscape website and select the option that applies to your computer. In my case, I’ll select the “dmg file for Intel architecture” option on the left (green arrow).

3. Choose an Install Location

The download should start, asking you where you’d like to save the file on your computer. I’ll save the file to my “Downloads” folder (green arrow – the file will be a .dmg file).

Click “Save” to start the download (red arrow).

Once the file has finished downloading, you should see a message in your browser window saying the download is complete. If you are using Google Chrome, click the folder icon labeled “Show in Finder” (red arrow). You can also simply open the Finder and navigate to your Downloads folder (or wherever you saved the file).

4. Run the DMG File

Double-click on the DMG file in the Finder window to run the file (green arrow).

A window will pop-up with two icons – the Inkscape icon and the Folder icon (usually for your Applications folder). Click and drag the Inkscape icon over the Applications folder icon and release your mouse (follow the green arrow to red arrow). This will install Inkscape into the folder.

If you already have an older version of Inkscape installed on your computer, a pop-up will display asking if you want to “Keep Both” (versions of Inkscape), “Stop” (a.k.a. cancel the install), or “Replace” (the older version with the newer version). Click the “Replace” button to remove the older version and update to the latest version of Inkscape.

A status bar will now appear as Inkscape is installed to your Applications folder.

Once complete, you’ll see “” installed in your Applications folder. Double-click on this to open Inkscape.

And there you have it! Inkscape is now installed on your Mac computer! Pretty easy, right? If you enjoyed this article, feel free to check out my other Inkscape video tutorials or Inkscape help articles on my website.
